Preschool #6 Dean’s School
We are blessed to help fund a preschool in South Africa in honor of Dean who would be 40 years old this year on September 18. Thank you for helping us provide the extras!
“Family and Friends, As many of you know, Simon and I are partnering with Build The Future to bring a preschool to a rural area of South Africa near Durban called Ndwedwe. The school will be called Nkumbanyuswa Crèche and will have a classroom building, office and classroom building, kitchen building, bathroom with flushing toilets to a septic tank, a vegetable garden and a playground. Staff will include a head teacher, assistant teacher, gardener and cook. Children receive breakfast of porridge, a snack like a peanut butter sandwich and lunch containing rice and protein and other nutrients.”
“Before we even left for SA, many were asking how they could help with this school. While we were there, I paid special attention to the existing schools we visited so that we could get an idea of things that would be needed. After talking with the leaders of BTF, we have created a wish list. Since shipping is not easy, especially after the mission trips are finished for the year and respecting the teachers and staff of the school, we will collect tax-deductible donations in order to purchase items in SA. Your donations will be put toward what is needed. Thank you so much!”

“We hope to do a book drive after school is back in session. We’ll take them with us in second suitcases when our school opens. A dear friend who is a teacher wants her students to help and she actually gave us the idea! Thanks Lisa K.!
BTF’s teachers try to use books depicting people who have brown skin. We will definitely honor this, and of course, there are plenty of books without people in them. Think ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ or my favorite, ‘Moo, Baa, La La La.’”

“Before my last trip to South Africa in 2013, the lyrics that resonated in me were these: If you wanna make the world a better place….Take a look at yourself and then make a change. I would love to put mirrors up in Dean’s school for the children, staff, and families to see themselves and know they can make the world a better place.”
“Continuing Education Days ~ South Africa has educational standards to which BTF teachers must adhere. Thandi, the lead teacher, is using the National Qualifications Framework for the curriculum. She is doing the training in-house to help overcome the logistical and financial challenges the BTF educators had in continuing their education. The teachers do not have to travel near as far as they would have had to.”

“Basic band-aids will be good for little boo boos but we’re super excited that there is a medical clinic right next to our school. We don’t know much about it yet but hope to meet them in the future.”
